Welcome to Blockheads 6 – Week 14: “Carousel Waltz” by Camille Roskelley!
This week in Blockheads 6, we’re spinning into something fun with Carousel Waltz, designed by Camille Roskelley! Though this block has a spinning pinwheel vibe, the construction is super straightforward, with easy-to-piece HSTs and rectangle units.

Getting Started
Before you begin, download the pattern for Carousel Waltz. Don’t miss the coloring sheet included—it’s a great way to play with color placement and audition different looks for your block.
This design is made from just two main units:
- Half-square triangles (HSTs)
- Two-patch units
If you’ve been sewing along, you’re already well-practiced with HSTs, but Allison also shares a handy tool, the Quick Quarter Ruler, to make them even easier. It’s an affordable little helper that makes marking and sewing precise seams simple.
Building the Block
The block comes together with:
- A pinwheel center, made from your HSTs
- Two-patch strips, which can be cut and pieced individually or sewn as a strip set before sub-cutting—whichever method you prefer
Once you’ve made your pinwheel and units, you’ll sew them together in rows and assemble the full block. Allison also demonstrates how to orient your fabrics so the design flows just right.
Fabric Inspiration
For her blocks, Allison combined fabrics from Heather Briggs’ Cottage Charm and Corey Yoder’s Bloom, along with a few basics like Thatched, Bella Solids, and Starry. She’s even making two different quilts—one to keep and one to donate!
